Fore! It’s more than just a word

To the average person, the word “fore” is interpreted simply as a number. “Four what?” might be their reply. No emotional response, no instant recognition, just a slightly puzzled look. For a golfer or golf enthusiast, the response is markedly different.

To a golfer the word “Fore!” invokes a completely different, and unique, range of emotions. If your are the one shouting fore! then you are most likely on the tee—perhaps at the first hole—about to partake in one of your favorite activities. Its your signal that its time to have a little well earned R&R. If your hear another golfer yell fore!, especially unexpectedly, then chances are your first thoughts are along the lines “duck and cover”, or at least they should be. But what is it about this almost magical word? Where did it come from and what does it really mean?

According to Wikipedia:

“Foré!” is shouted as a warning during a golf game when it appears possible that a golf ball may hit other players or spectators. The mention of the term in an 1881 British Golf Museum indicates that the term was in use at least as early as that period. The term means “look ahead”, and it is believed to come from the military “beware before”, which was shouted when a battery fired behind friendly troops.

Other possible origins include the term being derived from the term “fore-caddy”, a caddy waiting down range from the golfer to find where the ball lands. These caddies were often warned about oncoming golf balls by a shout “fore!”.

But what does the word really mean to a golfer? To this golfer it means its time to have Fun…something most of us need to do more Often. For at least the next 18 (or maybe 19) holes its time to Relax and Enjoy the simple pleasure and joy I get from a round of golf. Enjoy the gam, enjoy the company, and enjoy the challenge the game presents a little differently every time you play.

So there you have it. That’s what hearing the word “fore” means to me. I imagine golfers all over the world have a similar response…or at least I hope so. Happy golfing…Fore!
